In an effort to address the affordable housing crisis in Whitefish, the city council is considering a rental assistance program that aims to bridge the affordability gap for low-income residents.

With skyrocketing housing costs and limited availability, many individuals and families in the area are struggling to secure stable and affordable housing options.

The proposed Whitefish Workforce Assistance Program, developed by Housing Whitefish and the Whitefish Chamber of Commerce, seeks to provide monthly rental assistance to those in need.

Program Details

The Whitefish City Council is expected to approve an agreement with Housing Whitefish, allocating $200,000 from its affordable housing fund to support the program.

The assistance program, set to launch in 2024, will provide monthly rental aid to eligible applicants, prioritizing individuals with an income of 100% of the Area Median Income (AMI). To qualify, applicants must work an average of 32 hours per week and either currently reside or actively seek housing in Whitefish.

Funding and Partnerships

In addition to the city council's financial commitment, the Whitefish Chamber of Commerce has pledged $25,000 to the program.

Housing Whitefish is actively fundraising to secure an additional $50,000. Furthermore, a contribution of $25,000 from the Explore Whitefish Community Sustainability Fund will also support this crucial initiative.

Expected Impact

With the allocated funds, Housing Whitefish anticipates serving up to 60 households at a maximum assistance cap of $4,800 each. By providing direct payments to housing providers, the program aims to alleviate the financial burden on residents and ensure a stable and affordable living environment.

Public Hearings and Other Agendas

Beyond the rental assistance program, the city council will discuss several other important matters. This includes a potential fee increase for vendors at City Beach during the Fourth of July celebration.

Additionally, the council will address proposed changes to business registration fees, aimed at improving regulatory measures and promoting responsible short-term rentals within the city limits.

Conclusion

The proposed Whitefish Workforce Assistance Program offers hope to the growing number of individuals and families in Whitefish struggling with housing affordability.

By providing monthly rental aid, prioritizing those with lower incomes, and partnering with local community organizations, the program has the potential to make a significant impact on residents' lives.

The Whitefish City Council's consideration of this rental assistance initiative highlights their commitment to addressing the housing challenges faced by their community.
