VA Housing Grants: How Veterans Can Apply
These grants can pay for important changes to a house, such as installing ramps, widening doorways, and making other modifications that make it easier for veterans to get around.
Types of VA Housing Grants
1. Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) Grant
This grant is for veterans who own, or plan to own, a permanent home. To qualify, you must have a disability tied to your military service, such as:
- Loss or loss of use of more than one limb
- Blindness in both eyes
- Severe burns
- Loss of a lower limb that affects movement
These disabilities must make daily living and home access difficult. Veterans who were injured after September 11, 2001, can get this grant, but there is a yearly limit of 120 SAH grants for those who lost one lower limb.
If the limit is reached, you can try again next year. The highest SAH grant amount for 2025 is $121,812, which you can use to buy, build, or change your home to meet your needs.
2. Special Home Adaptation (SHA) Grant
This grant is for veterans or their family who own a home and meet certain disability requirements, such as:
- Losing both hands
- Severe burns
- Serious breathing problems
In 2025, the most you can receive from the SHA grant is $24,405. You can use this money to buy, build, or adapt your home to make it safer and easier to live in.
3. Temporary Residence Adaptation (TRA) Grant
For 2025, veterans eligible for the SAH grant can get up to $49,062, while those eligible for the SHA grant can get up to $8,760.
Using Your Grant
You do not have to spend all your grant money at once. Both SAH and SHA grants can be used up to six times during your life.
You can spread the funding out over several years, depending on what adaptations you need.
Application Process
To apply, you need to:
- Submit your application online or visit a local VA office
- Provide proof of home ownership or residency
- Submit documents showing your disability
- Get estimates from builders or contractors for the work you want done
Most grants require proof of your disability, home ownership or residency, and related legal documents.
Important Information
Grant amounts change every year to keep up with the cost of construction. Even if you use part of your grant one year, you can get the current maximum amount in future years when you use more of the grant.
VA housing grants are important for veterans with disabilities. They help make homes safer and easier to live in, improving both independence and quality of life.
Applying as soon as possible and following VA rules can help veterans get the highest level of support.
